The subject of workers is vast and complicated, good workers, or bad workers can be categorised in two major groups and known as ‘below the line’ and the ‘above the line’.

We all have good days and bad days, but where do we position ourselves most of the time, and how can we identify the good guys and the bad guys.

The below the line type will tend to blame someone else, why he or she did not complete his/her tasks or responsibilities, as a result they will be full of excuses and will tend to blame others for their mistakes or worse, outright denial of a potentially dangerous situation.

The above the line group will tend to take ownership of their actions, they will show responsibility and try to find a solution to a problem, they will be accountable and reliable.

We tend to promote front of house staff because they’ve been with us for a long time and Chefs because they are good cooks or they created a popular menu, but is that really enough? Is that an indication of good manager material?
